Found Footage: An iPad-controlled robot that attacks

Thanks to the iPad and TouchOSC, robot Hikari can now be controlled by our favorite tablet device. The system for control on the iPad is powered by TouchOSC, a remote control application that sends commands to an external device using the Open Sound Control (OSC) protocol. These commands are sent to a Max patch running on a Windows-based PC. Commands are then relayed directly to the PC-connected robot.

In the YouTube video after the break, owner Darkback2 uses this system to make Hikari walk and stand up from both a face-up and a face-down position. You should watch out, though, as the iPad controller can also be used to make Hikari attack, an action that fits in nicely with the video's drum-heavy theme music. For those that are wondering, ... no, robot Hikari does not dance.

Viewsonic G Tablet pulled from Staples stores, 'manufacturing defect' to blame

Oh boy, we've not been shy about our love for NVIDIA's Tegra 2, but the tablets that have opted to use it so far keep meeting the same miserable end: discontinuation from shop floor availability. First the Toshiba Folio 100 bit the British dust because of a bunch of quality control issues, and now Viewsonic's G Tablet is getting its marching orders from Staples, with only a "manufacturing defect" cited as the cause. If we weren't such charitable souls, we might suggest the defect was simply that this tablet wasn't very good yet someone still chose to manufacture it. Let's not be hasty, though -- it's a good idea to see what Office Depot does with its inventory before completely writing the G Tablet off.

Skinnyo helps you lose weight using peer pressure and challenges

For many people, the holidays mean food. Nom nom nom, chomp chomp chomp, and suddenly you've gained a few extra pounds. Skinnyo is a social website that tries to help you stage a preemptive strike in your struggle against chubbiness. At the core of the site is the weight graph, somewhat similar to the graph used on FitDay. Once you create an account, you can join all sorts of "challenges," or you can even start your own challenge.

Some of the public challenges at the time of writing are "Christmas Countdown," "Let's make the world 20 lbs lighter," and "2kgs in 4 weeks" (the loser buys the winner an HTC Desire HD!).

A challenge can have a limited number of participants, and it can also be private. The profile page, shown in the screenshot above, lets you micro-blog your way to a skinnier bod. Each update has your latest weight trend prominently displayed right next to your image.

Most of the people I know don't even like knowing their own weight, much less making it a public announcement. But if you're socially-inclined, Skinnyo is one interesting way to lose some weight.

Velocity Micro's 7-inch Cruz T301 Android 2.0 tablet surfaces on Amazon, shipping now for $250

It's like a Cruz Tablet, but with a T301 thrown into the mix. All jesting aside, we'd wager that the vast majority of simpletons wouldn't spot the differences between the existing Cruz Tablet and the T301 at a glance, and honestly, we wish Velocity Micro would've done a little work to remedy that. For whatever reason, the 7-inch slate is shipping with Android 2.0, and while the 800 x 600 capacitive touchpanel sounds lovely indeed, it's hard to get riled up for such a stale operating system. For those unconcerned with the luxuries present in Eclair and Froyo, there's an 802.11n WiFi radio, built-in Kindle app and a user replaceable Li-Ion battery that could last up to ten hours on a good day... or so the company says. Without question, the highlight here is the price -- at just $249.99, it's definitely creeping down into LCD e-reader territory, with a lot of bells and whistles to boot. She's shipping today if you're so inclined.

Google declares Chrome ready for enterprise duty

IT administrators tend to be a fickle bunch, and with good reason. When you're supporting a vital service that can determine whether or not your entire business can operate properly, you tend to be very cautious when it comes to changing out a key component. A key component like a Web browser, for example -- say, Internet Explorer 6, which is still a force to be reckoned with in the enterprise.

Google has been doing its best to get Chrome in the front door, of course. First there was Chrome Frame, which seamlessly integrates into Internet Explorer to provide a hybridized, modern Frankenbrowser. Next came Chrome's remoting feature -- which is still not ready for prime time but is positioning itself as an alternative to Terminal Services setups.

Two more recent additions -- the arrival of an MSI installer and added support for Windows policies -- have added even more enterprise cred to the browser. Chrome now offers an enticing package to the IT admin. It's secure, it's fast, and -- most importantly -- it's now easy to manage and deploy across an entire Windows network.

Over at the official Chrome Blog, Google took a moment to trumpet these features and they're no doubt hoping administrators take notice. "We're excited by the features built so far, and we're working hard on polishing the next set of policies that will make Google Chrome even more customizable and useful to users in the future," concludes the post. Successful test deployments with Proctor and Gamble, Boise State University, and Vanguard are also mentioned.

2010 has certainly been a phenomenal year for Chrome in the consumer market. Will Google see similar enterprise gains in 2011? We'll revisit this one next December.
