Infinity Blade hits App Store December 9 for $5.99

Chair and Epic Games' extremely impressive Infinity Blade title has gotten a final release date and price: you'll be able to hack and slash your way around the medieval RPG on December 9 for a purchase price of $5.99. The app will be universal and will run on iPhone 3GS and above, up to and including the iPad and the latest iPhone and iPod touch. Players will be able to level up and gear up their characters as they fight through the world towards the game's big boss, a character called "the God-King."

According to Chair's release, multiplayer won't be enabled right away, but free updates will be coming to the app soon after release, one of which will allow players to "battle online via Game Center." Sounds exciting. Epic Citadel, the Unreal Engine 3 demo, is of course, available for free on the App Store right now, but Infinity Blade will be a full-featured RPG game using the same technology. We can't wait!

Garden Gnome Carnage is a hectic, Christmas-themed Time-Waster

gardengnomecarnage

Ahh, the spirit of Christmas! Not that I would know anything about that, actually... But if Christmas is your thing, you might enjoy Garden Gnome Carnage. Or actually, even if it's not your thing, but you just enjoy the concept of brutally flinging tiny, merry garden gnomes all over the screen to the sound of hectic 8-bit music, this may be for you.

You're dangling off of a building's chimney. The gnomes are storming the building, trying to get up to the chimney and spread the good cheer of Christmas. Your goal is to keep them from getting there. You do this by moving the building from side to side (don't ask me why the building moves, but it's got wheels!).

As you move the building, you dangle to and fro, hitting any gnomes that are unfortunate enough to be in your trajectory. If you hit them extra hard, you get points. The whole thing rapidly devolves into a hectic gnome-throwing fest, and when you add the air strikes that you can call by hitting Space, well, ... you get the picture!

Deep Fry a Turkey

Summary: /* Other Thanksgiving How-tos */

[[Image:Turkeyfry1.jpg|thumb|left|300px|Photo by Gunther Hagleitner/[http://www.flickr.com/photos/hagleitn/4137721204/ Flickr]/CC]]
Thanksgiving is a quintessentially American holiday, and there are few cooking styles more American than deep frying. So why not put the two together and deep-fry your turkey?

If your skills in the tool shed are stronger than your skills in the kitchen, then you'll probably find it pretty easy to deep-fry a turkey. But you should be aware that open flames, splattering boiling oil and deep-fried foods are all pretty dangerous. After mishaps with dried-out Christmas trees, deep-fried–turkey disasters are the most common cause of holiday fires.

Luckily for you, we've put together this handy guide so your deep-fried turkey is not only delicious, but safe.

''This article is part of '''a wiki anyone can edit.''' If you have advice to add about frying that bird, log in and contribute.''
<br clear="all" />

==What you'll need==

* '''A small to medium size turkey.''' Under 12 pounds works best. Any larger, and the skin will likely burn before the inside meat is fully cooked, ruining one of the best things about a deep-fried turkey: delicious crispy skin.

* '''A very large stock pot.''' You need a pot large enough to completely submerge your turkey in oil. Generally, something in the 40-to-50-quart range will work. Head to your local restaurant-supply store to find large, cheap pots.

* '''A fryer basket or handle.''' While you're at the restaurant supply store, pick up a fryer basket or [http://www.flickr.com/photos/hagleitn/4136956047/ turkey brace] large enough to hold your bird, yet small enough to fit inside your pot. Instructions for making one yourself are in the next section.

* '''An outdoor burner.''' Don't even think about doing this inside your house.

* '''Thermometers.''' Both an oil/candy thermometer with a long probe and a meat thermometer would be ideal. An infrared thermometer for checking your oil temperature is even better, since you can check it from a distance.

* '''A lot of oil.''' Head to one of the big-box stores and stock up on peanut or sunflower oil (or another oil with a high smoking point)

* '''Protective gloves, goggles and jacket.''' Cover up good to prevent any splattering oil from sending you to the emergency room.

* '''You can use a turkey fryer''' if you want. They're sold at camping stores and big-box hardware stores. But you can probably find everything you need for less money -- especially if you already own a propane grill, a large pot or both.

==Preparation==

The first thing to do is make sure your turkey is '''completely thawed''' and defrosted -- water (from ice or melting ice) and hot oil make a very dangerous combination.

Remove the neck and giblets if there are any, along with a pop-up thermometer if your turkey came with one.

You'll need a metal basket or handle to submerge the turkey into the oil. Many companies make fryer baskets big enough to hold a turkey, because of the popularity of these deep-fried holiday treats.

If you don't have a deep-frying basket large enough to hold a turkey, you can make your own handle. Place the turkey on its shoulders (where the head was) and run some heavy gauge wire through the body, just beneath the breast (by the wings). Pull the wire through and loop back around, pulling it through several times to make a handle. Twist up any excess wire so you don't cut yourself and be sure to test your handle to make sure it is strong enough to pick up your turkey.

Now it's time to get your burner ready. Find a flat, stable surface outside to hold your burner. Make sure the area is dry and well ventilated and that there's nothing flammable in the vicinity. Keep in mind that some oil will probably spill or spatter, and that new deck you built over the summer may gain some unwanted character. Use the neighbor's lawn if they are away visiting for the holiday.

<blockquote style="margin-left:20px; padding:10px 0;border-bottom:5px solid #333; border-top:5px solid #333; display:block; float:right; width:200px; font-size:12px; color:#666;">'''Tip 1:''' If you're brining your turkey, use the same pot for both brining and frying. Just measure the displacement using brine instead of water.<br />'''Tip 2:''' If you're too lazy to measure, just use 3 gallons of oil. It usually comes in a box just that size. If it isn't enough, assume a nose-dive orientation into the fryer, leaving the ankle and keister high and dry (nobody eats those parts anyways).</blockquote>
Find out how much oil you'll need by performing a quick displacement measurement. Fill your pot with water and immerse the turkey. The water level should cover the turkey completely, but still be five or six inches below the rim of your pot. Remove the turkey and note water level -- this is how much oil you'll need in the pot. Aren't you a little Archimedes?

Now wash your turkey inside and out, and pat it dry. Make sure it is very dry. Then season it however you would like.

'''Thoroughly dry both the pot and the turkey before continuing'''

<br clear="all" />

==Cooking==

[[Image:Turkeyfry2.jpg|thumb|630px|left|Photo by James McCauley/[http://www.flickr.com/photos/nukeit1/66530600/ Flickr]/CC]]

Deep-frying a turkey is a really a two-person job. You need one person to always be with the turkey -- keeping an eye on the pot, making sure the oil isn't smoking and that the turkey is cooking properly -- and another person to help out.

To get started, fill your completely dry pot with oil up to the point you noted earlier when you took your volume measurement.

Light your burner and let the oil heat up to about 350 degrees Fahrenheit, or 175 degrees Celsius.

Put on the protective gloves, goggles and jacket. Using a metal hook to hold your wire handle, pick up the bird. Have the person helping you turn off the burner while you put the turkey in the oil -- this will prevent one of the major source of deep fryer accidents, spattering oil hitting the open flame.

Turn off the burner and gently, slowly lower the bird into the oil. The reaction -- even with a completely dry bird -- will be violent. Oil will probably bubble up and spray on your gloves. Be extremely careful and lower the turkey into the oil slowly to minimize splattering. Don't ever just drop it in -- this is the No. 1 mistake first-timers make.

Once your bird is in the oil, the hard part is over. Relight the burner, and you can relax a bit and set the timer -- generally allow between three and four minutes of cooking time per pound of turkey. A 15-pound turkey will take around 45 minutes.

'''Never leave the turkey fryer unattended.'''

Once the turkey has cooked for the allotted about of time, check to make sure it's an even, golden brown. If it passes the visual check, remove the bird and check the internal temperature with a food thermometer. The internal temperature should be 165 degrees to 170 degrees Fahrenheit in the breast and 175 degrees to 180 degrees Fahrenheit in the thigh.

When your turkey is done, allow it to cool, and remove the wire handle.

== Safety Tips ==

* Watch [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kspx1oOP_fE this safety hazards video from Underwriters Laboratories] before proceeding.

* Always keep a grease fire extinguisher handy, make sure your extinguisher is rated for grease fires.

* Don't cook the turkey on a wood deck. If the fryer boils over the flame will immediately cause [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kspx1oOP_fE a violent fire] and your deck will be fuel. Instead, place the fryer on a stable place where it will not tip over.

* Make sure other people -- especially children -- and pets stay away from the cooking area.

* Allow the oil to cool completely before recycling or storing.

* Immediately wash hands, utensils, equipment and surfaces that have come in contact with raw turkey.

== Further expediency ==

If 45 minutes it too long, use Thermite to prepare a turkey in under a minute.

Google rumored to have bought Groupon for $2.5 billion

Google logoIt seems, if unnamed insider sources and some speculation from TechCrunch are to be believed, that Google has just bought Groupon, the deal-of-the-day website, for $2.5 billion.

Yahoo tried, and failed, to buy Groupon for over $3 billion earlier this year, but little is known about why the deal fell apart. That Google has now apparently bought them for 'only' $2.5 billion would suggest that Groupon's management team would prefer a future as part of Google instead of Yahoo.

As far as what Google stands to gain from the deal, other than raw cash -- Groupon is rather profitable -- we will probably see extensive integration between Groupon and Google's Places and Shopping products. When searching for Places, coupons for local businesses could be shown. When looking for the lowest prices with Shopping, coupons could be worked into the results.

Ultimately, though, I just hope that this merger will result in a site called Goopon.

LG Star makes another appearance, shows off UI and a benchmark

LG Star

Just a few weeks after we first saw a glimpse of the LG Star, it makes another appearance, this time showing off more than just the screen and battery door.  We're seeing HDMI out, a decent look at LG's custom Froyo OS, and even a benchmark of the Tegra2 chipset in action.  All that's left is to find out if and when this baby will ever reach North America, and how the chipset preforms once a version of Android that supports dual core processors is installed.

There's a gallery of pics at the source link, be sure to have a look.  [Phandroid]

Survive a TSA Screening

Summary: moved the links to file complaints to the bottom -- the other complaint links were already down there, so i'm trying to keep it consistent.

[[Image:TSApatdown.jpg|thumb|left|280px|A man undergoes a pat-down during TSA security screening, Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Photo by Ted S. Warren/AP]]
Turn your nose to the air this holiday season, and among the pleasing smells of roasted poultry and freshly baked pies, you may detect a whiff of outrage.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has run afoul of security experts and the general public by introducing some radical changes to how airline passengers are screened -- just in time for the holiday travel peak.

Central to the issue are the TSA's new advanced imaging devices that can see through your clothes and display a picture of your naked body -- and see any weapons or contraband you're hiding under your jeans. Refuse to walk through one and you'll receive an "enhanced pat-down," a policy that has also touched a nerve among travelers.

The debate has gotten so heated, lawmakers are [http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/11/scan-ban/ trying to ban the body scanners], and [http://www.optoutday.com/ a movement is afoot] to encourage travelers to opt out of a full body scan at airports. The "Opt Out Day" protests are scheduled for Wednesday, November 24, but we expect the protests to continue through the rest of the holidays.

If you're planning on protesting the TSA's new policies -- or if you're just an innocent traveler who wants to know your options -- here's our primer.

''This article is part of '''a wiki anyone can edit.''' If you have advice to add about protesting or opting out, log in and contribute.''

===Tips for travelers===

The current system works by shuttling passengers either through the traditional metal detectors or the Rapiscan body imagers. If you trip the metal detector repeatedly or you decline to go into the Rapiscan, you will get an "enhanced pat-down." This means your body will be closely checked, including the areas near the female and male genitals, by an officer of the same sex.

Airline screening has been ruled legal by some lower courts as an "administrative search" -- that is, the TSA has the right to check you and your belongings to make sure you are not a threat to aviation. However, the Supreme Court has not specifically held that airport screening searches are constitutionally reasonable administrative searches.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has filed suit [http://epic.org/privacy/litigation/EPIC_Body_Scanner_OB_Final.pdf (PDF link)] against the TSA, challenging the use of the scanners and "enhanced pat-downs" as being violations of multiple federal laws, as well as violations of the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution.

It's not clear how far legally these searches can go. For example, could the TSA require a cavity search and if you refused one, could you be fined? That's an unknown legal question, but chances are if the screeners have that much reason to believe you are carrying contraband, they will involve the police.

If you do want to refuse a screening and a patdown, you can now do so without a fine. [http://boardingarea.com/blogs/flyingwithfish/2010/11/22/tsa-clarifies-policy-for-pat-down-refusal-in-time-for-thanksgiving/ You have the right to refuse the screening at any time]. If you do refuse, however, the TSA officers will escort you from the airport, you'll have to give up your flight, and you won't be allowed to get back into the security line. If you refuse screening and attempt to reenter the secure area, the checkpoint will be shut down and you may be subject to civil and criminal penalties.

The TSA can't detain you at this point -- they have to notify the police to detain you. There are usually plenty of police posted at the TSA checkpoint, however, and if a police officer asks you to stop, you must do so and provide ID.

Finally, here's Ed Hasbrouck on [http://papersplease.org/wp/2010/11/23/airlines-threaten-illegal-actions-against-travelers-who-opt-out-of-groping/ how to get a refunded plane ticket] if you decline to go through screening and refuse to be patted down. It's a long shot, but possible.

===Tips for protesters===

If you're planning on protesting, here are some additional tips:

'''Do not''' make jokes about bombs, hijacking or carrying banned materials.

That said, the screening line is not a Constitution-free zone. You may express your displeasure and political opinions, and wear a shirt that makes fun of the TSA. There's a fine line between free speech and impeding the TSA, and the latter can [http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2006/09/tsa_hawley_an_i/ result in a fine].

Likewise, the Fifth Amendment applies as well. You have the right to remain silent. You don't have to explain anything or respond to any officer's questions. You do have to show ID and if you don't have one with you, whether or not you'll be allowed to fly is at the TSA's discretion.

Whatever you do, remain courteous. Remember that the TSA workers are humans with jobs to do.

Photographing or recording the TSA or law enforcement officials? The [http://blog.tsa.gov/2009/03/can-i-take-photos-at-checkpoint-and.html TSA says they have no prohibition] against you recording the screening protest, but local and state ordinances vary when it comes to recording in public, especially when it comes to recording the police. Quite a few people have been arrested and prosecuted for recording police officers, and while you may be within your rights, you might have to prove that in court or sue the cops later after you've been arrested.

Taking off your clothes as a protest? Getting totally naked is illegal and will get you arrested. As for undressing, again, local and state statutes--and your experience--will vary. As a matter of principle, stripping down to bike shorts and a thin ribbed tank top, or doing as @furrygirl did and [http://vimeo.com/17057322 stripping to a camisole and panties], is clearly protected First Amendment speech, but [http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/nov/21/gun-crusader-strips-down-shorts-hauled-out-san-die/ the ruse did get the bike shorts guy arrested] in San Diego.

[http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2010/11/going-commando.ars Going commando under a kilt]? Truly wicked.

Shop Savvy for iPhone packs a punch for shopping season

Just a couple of days ago, I took a look at the Amazon Price Check app. It's a great way to compare prices against Amazon and other online retailers. Before you hit the stores this weekend, it's also a good idea to have the free app Shop Savvy tucked away on your iPhone.

It contains an accurate scanner like the Amazon app, but it also includes local prices and a map to get you to your store of choice. Even better, the app puts a little blue dot next to the stores that have your items in stock. The app has been around for a while, but it has been updated to include deals, complete with info about rebates, sales and special promotions. It also includes coupon codes. The app includes reviews, and you can add your own, as well as share the low prices you have found via email, Twitter and Facebook.

I took it on a jaunt to some local stores and it worked very well. The scanner locked in on the barcode quite quickly, and it was accurate. When you simply type in the name of a product, the app suggests what you might be looking for, so it saves you a bunch of keystrokes.

The app does make local and online comparisons, and not surprisingly, the online prices are often cheaper, but not always. This is a pretty handy app if you're running around looking for gifts. I've given it a permanent place on my iPhone, and I think you'll find it both handy and money saving. If you've seen our survey of shopping apps, be sure to add this one to your list.

Angry Birds hits 10 million iPhone downloads, coming to gaming consoles

Angry Birds creator Rovio has announced that the game has fetched a whopping 36 million downloads so far, including ten million paid downloads on the iOS platform alone. Those are some pretty incredible numbers -- there's no question at all that Angry Birds is as legendary an app on the iPhone as they come. In the larger mobile picture, Rovio still has a way to go -- the company itself wants to do 100 million downloads on the Android platform (where the game is a free download, and allows for premium purchases within the app), and even then will have to go a bit further to match up with Tetris' 100 million paid downloads on all mobile platforms.

But the game has definitely found its place in mobile app history already. Not only is there still that Christmas version planned for the coming holiday season, but Rovio has also announced that it will be releasing versions of the game for the Xbox 360, PS3, and the Wii sometime in 2011. Next year will bring another smartphone version, not a full sequel, but one where the pigs will apparently get a little more of the spotlight than the birds have given them so far. Talk about a bulldozer of an IP -- as big as this game has gotten, we haven't seen the last of it yet.

Facebook Messages: combine all of your inboxes and IM clients into one, unlimited storage service

It's more like instant messaging than email -- more like a conversation than a threaded email conversation. Yes, every communication that goes through the Facebook messaging platform will create a conversation history. Much like Google Wave, actually.

The idea is that you will push every digital communication through Facebook, and thus everything can be logged -- every message has a context. If you email and SMS your significant other, both those messages will appear in order, in the conversation history.

Facebook has invested in lots of shiny new infrastructure that builds upon their existing technologies -- they're ready for the swell of traffic that the email instant messaging will generate. Lots of protocols are supported, too, like XMPP and Jabber -- and IMAP support is planned.

The 'social inbox' feature sounds a lot like a hyper-intelligent 'Priority Inbox' system. By default, email (or any communication) from your friends or friends-of-friends will appear at the top of your inbox, followed by everyone else. You can also automatically bounce anyone that isn't a friend; awesome! You can of course make it so non-Facebook friends appear at the top of your inbox too.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO, closed with (roughly) these words. "This is not an email killer. This is a messaging system that includes email as one part of it. We don't want people to shut down their Yahoo or Gmail account. People are shifting towards more and more simple communication -- if we do a good job, we think more people will engage in IM [on Facebook's new platform]. If we do a good job at that, maybe one day, two years out, people will say that instant messaging, not email, is the way forward."

Update:
  • There's no content filtering (no rules)
  • Incoming mail from people that don't use Facebook will automatically hit your normal, 'non-priority' inbox
  • You can move friends down the priority list, and move 'external' non-Facebook friends up
  • Message forwarding will be possible
  • Unlimited storage! Or at least, no explicit cap on how much data you can store
  • There's a video after the break that demonstrates the new Messages product

Osram's new LED package 50 percent brighter, promises cameraphone flashes that suck 50 percent less

See those smiling twentysomethings up there? That, folks, is the kind of happiness that can only be achieved with 150 glorious lux of LED intensity. Fortunately, Siemens subsidiary Osram Opto Semiconductors has packaged a new LED chip that capable of putting up such impressive figures, a claimed 50 percent brighter than its predecessor -- and that makes it capable of evenly illuminating a 90-centimeter area from a distance of one meter away. First, the iPad lists the six most recently-used apps while in portrait orientation and seven while in landscape. The iPhone always lists four, regardless of orientation. Also, swipe all the way to the right on the iPhone to bring up the orientation lock button, iPod controls (back, play/pause and skip) plus the iPod app icon. The iPad displays those, too, as well as a brightness slider and a volume slider.

New transition

This is minor but still fun. The animation that the iPad uses when fast-switching between apps is slightly different than what the iPhone uses.
